With 15,000 driving tests under his belt, Thomas Faltermeier has witnessed both the sad and the comical in people’s lives. Every driving test is exciting and unique for the 54-year-old examiner, just as it is for the examinees.

“We’re going to take the next right” is the kind of instruction one is likely to hear when taking a practical driving test. While student drivers sweat it out behind the wheel, the poker-faced man in the backseat can make or break their day. Regardless of the outcome, it will be a day to remember.

Thomas Faltermeier is one of those individuals who decides the fate of student drivers. He has been the driving examiner at TÜV SÜD’s Regensburg branch office since 2004. However, he sees himself less as an examiner, and more as an instructor and psychologist. When he senses that a student driver is especially nervous, he tries to have a calming effect. Sometimes, he will crack a joke to lighten the mood. However, he makes a point of staying objective at all times.
